The IISS generates facts, produces analysis and exerts influence.
Facts. The IISS produces independent, policy-relevant data about geopolitics, geo-economics and conflict, however caused, that may have an important strategic dimension. Our analysts continuously collect and validate defence data on over 170 countries. The Military Balance Plus digital database allows users to produce bespoke graphics and employ advanced analytic tools to understand defence trends. We have developed a methodology to measure cyber power. Our Conflict, Security and Development research programme produces an annual review of all conflicts. We produce regular infographics on security, defence and economic developments in China and the Middle East, as well as on how states strategically leverage emerging technological capabilities to influence cyberspace. Our Myanmar Conflict Map tracks and explains the evolution of the competition for power there. And our Gulf Bailout Diplomacy database is the largest source of information about Gulf financial assistance since the 1960s.
Analysis. The IISS identifies crucial questions and publishes clear, precise and timely analysis on strategic issues. We have evaluated the military attrition of Ukraine and Russia, Western rearmament programmes and performance, the cost of European strategic autonomy, the economic and security trajectories of the Belt and Road Initiative. We have provided updates on conflicts from Ukraine to Sudan and the Levant, assessed Iran’s influence networks across the Middle East and the Houthis’ missile arsenal, and examined long-range strike capabilities in the Asia-Pacific. We have contributed to the international discussion and promoted a high-level exchange of views on missile technologies. We also offer tailored geopolitical advice and bespoke data products designed to deliver critical advantage to a wide range of private-sector clients.
Influence. The IISS informs government policy formulation and shapes public debate through our ability to convene heads of state, government ministers and experts at our world-renowned Shangri-La and Manama Dialogues, as well as new events such as the IISS Prague Defence Summit and the Global Security and Innovation Summit. These events provide major platforms for annual public-policy statements, as well as private bilateral and multilateral meetings among government officials. Engaging business leaders and key regional strategists, they play a major role in enhancing regional strategic transparency.
